All this means that Glock in 2003 introduced the 45 GAP. Inspired by the success of shortening (and shortening) the previous 10mm into the 40 S&W, Glock decided they could emulate it by introducing a shortened version of the 45 ACP.

The 45 GAP actually hits the mark with a barrel that is .143 inches shorter than the 45 ACP. 45 GAP can do this without sacrificing performance because it is designed for today's powder. Besides all that, we have to ask: Does the 45 GAP do the same thing as the 45 ACP, just in a smaller package? Let's compare ballistics, stopping power, and recoil to see how the Glock stacks up against the 45 ACP.

Outwardly, the 45 GAP is essentially a shorter version of the 45 ACP ammunition: the same bullet pressure and chamber, and both contain less copper. As our ballistic data shows, both rounds actually deliver the same ballistic results. The muzzle velocity of the No. 45 GAP round is significantly different from the equivalent weight of the 45 ACP. Bullets may roll faster in one round or another just depending on the weight of the bullet.

This is a great place where the 45 ACP offers an advantage that the 45 GAP does not: overpressure ammunition. The 45 ACP + P cartridge may pack more punch, but it will also provide a flatter trajectory that will gain more kinetic energy. In theory you can open 45 GAP + P. To our knowledge, it has never been produced commercially.

Several factors determine how effectively a cartridge can neutralize a threat. Because 45 ACP and 45 GAP fire essentially identical bullets, they have the same initial winding channel diameter and sectional density (which represents the bullet's penetration potential). 45 GAP is another story. You can easily buy a G37 because Glock still makes them. But finding 45 GAP ammo—let alone a lot of 45 GAP rounds—can be a pain. The demand for 45 GAP simply isn't high enough for ammunition manufacturers to continue to provide raw materials for production. So even in the best of times, the pickings can be slim.

In general, the 45 GAP performs the same as the 45 ACP. It can be as accurate, powerful and easy to control as its predecessor. However, the 45 GAP is simply not enough for shooters to transition from well-established and popular rounds.

45 GAP will be around for a while, but hopefully it will be out of production. Years from now, it will live on as nothing more than a curiosity among handloaders who like to build cartridges to exact specifications.
