45 Double Stack - You can certainly pick up a double stack 1911 without going broke...or at least going broke. Unfortunately, few go for rock bottom prices, and you probably wouldn't want them anyway.

However, in many cases they are not very suitable for concealed carry. Famous examples aren't good for your wallet either. STI pistols - while incredibly beautiful and incredibly well made - will set you back $3,000 or more. Competition guns from other brands...well, you really can't get one for less than $2000.

However, a pistol of this size has some characteristics as a competition or home defense pistol, retaining the excellent ergonomics of the 1911 without the disadvantage of reduced capacity.

Except... the format is starting to catch on more and more. There are more and more copies that you can pick up for much more reasonable amounts. Keep in mind though... they still aren't exactly cheap, since the weapons on this list aren't cheap.

If you want a double stack 1911 with the least amount of investment, the Rock Island Armory GI Standard FS HC is the ticket. MSRP is $608, which means street prices will be closer to $550 or less. But what you save in money, you give up in equipment.

It is a bare gun, with a parkerized finish, GI style thumb safety, GI style sights, and GI style grip safety. Polymer grips and pistol come with one (1) 10 round magazine, with 14 round frames available for purchase from RIA. It is made in God's caliber, .45 ACP.

It's a GI gun that can hold more. Granted, Rock Island Armory makes rugged, reliable weapons for the working class, so it will work. You can leave it as is or rework it if you like; It all depends on you. The good news is that since it's based on the Para/Caspian frame, the design... holsters aren't that hard to come by.

One of the new guns that Rock River Arms had for SHOT Show 2020 is the Rock River Arms 3G-11. If you want more or less exactly the same as 2011, but don't want to spend that much, this is a quality option that will realistically be affordable...but not cheap.

For those unfamiliar, Rock River Arms manufactures its 1911 pistols the old fashioned way; they make hand made custom double pistols dating back to 1911. In terms of how they build their guns as well as price they are more or less in the same league as Dan Wesson as opposed to Sig Sauer, Springfield Armory or Colt.

The 3G-11, which may be renamed at some point, is a competition pistol through and through, with a 2011-style stainless steel slide and frame. If you want bells and whistles, it's got them. Front and rear slide serrations, Novak-style sights, ambi safety levers, beavertail-upward safety with memory notch, skeletonized trigger and hammer, and extended magwell for rapid reloading.

This thing is made for dropping a lot of benches, not for concealed carry, so know what you're getting yourself into. The final price isn't available yet, but after talking to their man Steve at the SHOT Show booth...I'm expecting somewhere around $1,500. Again, it's not cheap, but the build quality alone is worth the initial price.

Another doublestack 1911 that won't break the bank is the Rock Island Armory Tac Ultra FS HC. This is a complete meal, with many of the features that people love in a 2011-style pistol, without the scary price tag.

The MSRP is a much more reasonable $906, which is more than $800 on the street, so to speak.

For that you get a parkerized finish, G10 grips, beavertail safety grip with memory bump, Novak style sights (black rear, fiberglass front) ambi competition thumb safeties and your choice of .45 ACP (14+1 capacity) or 9 mm, which increases the capacity to 17 + 1.

If you're willing to do a little hunting, another good example of a Doublestack 1911 for a decent sticker price is the Remington R1 Recon Commander. Expect to pay around $1,000, maybe even $900.

For those who don't know, Remington purchased and incorporated Para USA to manufacture their 1911 pistols. The Remington Recon is simply the Para Recon model with "Remington" on the slide.

So what does it give? It's a double commander, in .45 ACP or 9mm, giving you the option of 15+1 or 18+1. The finish is black PVD over stainless steel. The frame also features the addition of competition-style ambi safety levers, a beavertail grip safety with a memory notch, and a flared ejection port. A skeleton hammer and trigger were added to reduce weight. The sights are Novak style and the frame is rail mounted if you want to add accessories and G10 grips have been added along with 25 LPI control on the front and back of the grips.

Why would you? Remington 1911 pistols have excellent build quality and very good triggers, but because they say "Remington" instead of "Colt," people ignore them. And that's just stupid. If you can find one, this would be a great choice. And since it's a Para Black Ops 14.45 Commander in every way, that means it fits all Black Ops 14.45 Commander holsters.

What 2011 doesn't have a manual safety? the last paragraph of your article says, "One of the main differences is that the 1911 uses a manual safety, while the 2011 does not." All the ones I've looked at have a standard 1911 thumb operated safety, many are ambi.

About 20 years ago I came across a used double stack S.A. .45 1911 and paid about $450. I still have it, although I don't shoot much with it anymore, I've gone with the S.A. now. 1911 compact in 9mm (age (daily carry)).

I have a 9mm 17 round RIA Model #51679 (TAC ULTRA FS HC) pistol and can't find a vertical shoulder holster to save my life. I think double the cost is the problem. An internet leak gave people an early look at Springfield Armory's new Prodigy pistol, but that did little to detract from the release of this gun, which is arguably the most interesting look at a 1911 from a major gun manufacturer in a long time. The two models released today represent the launch of a new Double-Stack 1911 product line for Springfield that will likely expand in the future.

Many 1911 pistols, good and bad, have claimed to be a "modernized" version of John Browning's seemingly immortal semi-automatic pistol design by being made of state-of-the-art materials with advanced coatings or adding all the complex and colored controls possible, along with night sights and Picatinny rail on the frame. But these are mostly single-layer designs from over a century ago.

First, the Prodigy only comes in 9mm and 9mm chamberings. All you purists who can't stand 1911s in anything but .45 ACP, go scream into your pillow real quick, get it out of your system, come back and read about this cool accuracy focused 9mm 1911 that has a 17 Capacity +1 with its recessed double magazine and 20+1 in an extended magazine while retaining the best features of the platform. Both magazines are included with the gun, and an even larger 26-round magazine is also available separately.

That's an impressive maximum capacity indeed, considering that .45 ACP 1911s hold up to 8 rounds with a flush magazine, and Springfield's single chambered 9mm 1911s can only hold 9 rounds.
