The 45th Infantry Brigade was formed from existing elements of the disbanded 45th Infantry Division, which saw extensive action during World War II and the Korean War. The 45th Infantry Brigade was activated in 1968. and was assigned to train active duty military units until 1994 when the 45th in 1999. the brigade had two companies (A/1-179 and C/1-179) as part of the UN. peacekeeping forces deployed during the Bosnian war. in 2003 The A/1-179th Infantry deployed to Saudi Arabia and the B/1-179th deployed to Kuwait to provide security for Patriot missile sites. During the invasion of Iraq, B/Company 1-179th advanced north of Baghdad to establish itself in Taji, Iraq. Later that year, the 45th Third Brigade deployed to Afghanistan in 2011, assigning the brigade to full-spectrum operations for the first time since the 1950s.

The brigade received the full heraldry, lineage and honors of the 45th Infantry Division, including its shoulder sleeve insignia and WWII Korean campaign decals. It is the last Army Inventory Brigade to have the diamond-shaped shoulder sleeve insignia. Since 1999 The 45th Infantry Brigade received several awards of its own for its participation in Operations Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Before World War II, the division was called upon many times to maintain order in times of disaster and maintain peace during political unrest. Oklahoma Governor John C. Walton used an army of units to prevent state legislators from preparing to impeach him in 1923. Governor William H. Murray called the guards several times to close the banks, eat to distribute, and once by force.
