45 Cal Revolver - The Smith & Wesson Model 625 is a six-round double-action revolver chambered in moon clips for .45 ACP. The Model 625 is an improved stainless steel version of the Smith & Wesson Model 22 and a direct descendant of the Smith & Wesson M1917 revolver issued during World War I.
Based on S&W's stainless steel N-frame (large) revolver, the Model 625 was introduced as the 1988 .45 CAL, a limited edition model known as the 1988 International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Commemorative. It was fitted with a 5-inch (127 mm) barrel with a full-length stock.

A regular production model of the Model 625 was introduced in 1989. It was also produced with 3- and 4-inch barrels. Standard offerings now include only 4- and 5-inch barrels.

The S&W Model 625 Mountain Gun is a lighter version of the Model 625, with a shorter stock and tapered barrel, with "Mountain Gun" engraved on one side of the barrel. The Model 625-10 is a new version of the Smith & Wesson Performance Seater revolver, introduced in 2004. This is the revolver version of the 625 revolver. The S&W Model 625-10 is a stainless steel upgrade of the M1917 revolver. Popular starter gun for conversion to Fitz Special.
Another version of the Rect Performance Cter, the S&W Model 625 JM, was introduced in 2005. "JM" stands for Jerry Miculek, Roman Revolver Rapid Shooter and is his personal design. The Model 625 JM uses a 4-inch (102 mm) barrel with adjustable rear sights and gold-beaded black partridge front sights. Model 625 JM is finished in matte bead sprayed stainless steel. The handles are designed by Mikulek.
Another Smith & Wesson .45 ACP revolver is the Model 325 Night Guard. It is similar to the 625-10 in that the frame is aluminum scandium bld. It has the same rear sight as the 625-10, but the 325 Night Guard front sight has a tritium night seat. Model 325 is matte black.

The .45 ACP Model 625 was used on September 11, 1999 by Jerry Mikulek, who set the world record for fastest six shots, one reload, and six more shots in 2.99 seconds.
The Model 625 was designed for shooting. 45 ACP pistol cartridges with moon clips. It will chamber a .45 ACP cartridge without the use of moon clips, but the ejector cannot measure a rimless cartridge, so empty shells must be ejected with a cleaning rod or PCL.
It can also use a .45 auto rim as it was designed for revolvers chambered in .45 ACP using moon clips. The Model 625 could also be fired with the new .45 GAP cartridge, but only with the use of moon clips. The .45 ACP is an excellent and effective cartridge that has been around for more than a century.

The .45 operates at a lower pressure, resulting in less ammunition wear. However, the ballistics of the wound is impressive. No hollow points are needed for effective results. The 451-inch bullet starts out with an impressive diameter and cuts a full-caliber hole. Accuracy may vary.
Chambered in a variety of firearms, including pistols, carbines, and machine guns, the .45 ACP is also an excellent revolver cartridge. The first .45 ACP revolver was an advantage. At the beginning of World War I, the US Army was in dire need of 1911 pistols. Since Colt and Smith & Wesson produced .455 caliber double-action revolvers for the British, it was decided to bring these quality revolvers chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge to the supply line.
The .45 ACP did not have a case rim like the .38 Special and .45 Colt, so other means of chambering and ejection were required. The .45 ACP cylinder was designed to be a self-loading pistol for a cartridge placed in the mouth of the case. Thin sheet metal clips were invented to allow ejection through the ejector star. This equipment resulted in the fastest revolver to load and unload. Such fighting ability was not appreciated by everyone until much later, when the revolver was used in high-speed competition.
The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 was issued to US Border Patrol, Post Office and bank guards after World War I. Smith & Wesson finally offered a quality scoped revolver in this caliber. The best of the breed is arguably the Center Model 625 .45 ACP revolver. The 625 is an N (large frame) revolver with a four-inch barrel. The 625 has a special flattened barrel with a performance center. The sights are on the front of the post with brass beads. The rear sight is the justifiably famous Smith & Wesson fully adjustable rear sight. The 625 is a double-action revolver with a flip-out barrel. The stainless steel frame has a rounded butt. This design allows the use of a more compact round butt grip or a larger square conversion type grip. The action is smooth and the revolver is made of good materials.
The Performance Of The .45 Revolver
After many years of carrying a single action revolver as a backup when hiking or hunting, I ditched the .45 Colt for this "new style" double action revolver. A significant difference in efficiency. The 625 is fast on target and faster than not only single action revolvers, but all other non-moon clip revolvers.
The revolver is large but relatively light, allowing it to be comfortably worn under a light jacket or concealed carry vest. The Falco full leather OWB holster I chose for this revolver rides high and comfortable. (falcoholsters.com) The Smith & Wesson 625 is not as quick to draw as a K-frame revolver, but once the revolver is primed and ready to fire, the revolver is quick to target and controllable with rapid fire. The 625 was designed for bat competitions, where the revolver was used to fire rapidly and knock a row of bowling pins off the table. The shooter who clears the board the fastest wins. The smooth roll of the revolver limits the effects of recoil and recoil. Focus on the front sight and smoothly pull the trigger back on either and you'll get a shot. The revolver weighs 42 ounces, so recoil is not a factor.
The Performance Center revolver features a well-designed hammer spur for those who deliberately prefer to hold the hammer back for single fire. The cylinder is chamfered for ease of loading. A 230-grain ball load is too fast to slide into the chamber. Semi-cotton cutters and hollow point bullets require a bit more movement. Instead of holding the muzzle of the bullet and pushing the bullet into the barrel, the moon clip is held rearward at real speed. People who have learned to use speed loaders in regular revolvers can load faster with moon clips. The barrel is shorter than some revolvers. Most .45 ACP revolvers will shoot fine without moon clips, but the cases used must be selected individually. My revolver fires without moon clips, with occasional flares, but mostly with light primers. Although a slight inconvenience, the Performance Center 625 is more accurate than most .45 ACP revolvers. The shorter barrel and elongated forcing cone allow for greater accuracy.
Most .45 ACP revolvers since 1917 used low rifling because they were designed for the 230-grain jacketed bullet. Accuracy with hard cast lead bullets is not always ideal. The Performance Center revolver has a deep opening rifling and is exceptionally accurate with hard-cast handloads while jacketed bullets. A hard cast 255 grain bullet (Mattsbullets.com) at 800 fps seems to be the sweet spot for accuracy. I don't like the handle. Not only are they wild, they're also flashy - the sharp edge at the top is irritating. A set of Hogue monogrips solved this shortcoming.

From top to bottom, the 625, the Colt Python, sometimes called a .41 frame, and the K frame Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum. The 625 is bigger than the Magnums but can handle faster.
Much of the ammo used in this revolver is Black Hills Ammunition 200 grain LSWC. I have also shot Black Hills Ammunition 185 grain JHP, Black Hills Ammunition 230 grain JHP and Black Hills Ammunition 135 grain Honey Badger. Accuracy is excellent. The revolver is good for five-shot two-inch groups at 25 yards. Sometimes the groups are a little smaller, sometimes bigger, depending on the situation
