Engineers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center's Dahlgren Division designed, developed and delivered an improved 105 mm gun aircraft unit designed specifically to fire the AC-130 gun.

Engineers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center's Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) in Dahlgren, Va., designed, developed and delivered a custom-designed 105 mm gun anti-aircraft unit (GAU) with the AC-130 gun.
The 105mm GAU allows fighters in the field to complete their missions more effectively and safely, while the AC-130 provides close air support, air interdiction and troop protection.
New weapons replace previous weapon systems and positively impact warfighters' ability to operate and maintain systems in the field.
"This has become a more reliable system with less maintenance," said Matthew Buckler, chief mechanical engineer of NSWDDD's Battle Management System (BMS), in a NAVSEA news release. "If we can get a system that's more reliable, more repeatable, more usable, and allows the warfighter to complete the mission every time - that's a huge benefit to the warfighter."

From the beginning of the design effort, Dahlgren engineers behind the 105mm gun worked directly with the warfighter to get real-time advice from experienced gunners and technicians.
Engineers in the GAU project traveled to Wright-Patterson, Robins, Eglin, Hurlburt Field and Cannon Air Force Bases throughout development for testing and direct interaction with the fighter. Gunners and technicians also came to Dahlgren to provide insight into the performance of the hardware after testing.

The previous iteration of the AC-130 105mm gun system consisted of the M102 Howitzer and the M137A1 recoil mechanism. Designed for easy transportation by helicopter or light vehicle, the 105 mm M102 gun first saw service in Southeast Asia with the US Army in 1966. The light weight of the M102 made it suitable for use on board the AC-130 fighter. The M102 Howitzer and M137A1 recoil mechanism are no longer supported by the Army, meaning upgrades are necessary due to lags and technological advances since the original recoil mechanism was designed.

Improvements to the 105mm GAU are complete, however, the engineers at Dahlgren were careful to ensure that the weapon's functionality, accuracy and usefulness remain largely the same.
During the iterative design process, Buckler said the team encountered challenging but navigable obstacles and solved each problem as it arose.
"We've described [the development process] as peeling an onion," Buckler said. "You take the fastest problem and solve it. Then when you solve it, there are other things that are more important, and you keep solving them until you've solved all the main problems and you can live with any maintenance interval.
When the gun fires thousands of rounds and the recoil has been accelerated to 350G, or 350 times the force of gravity, maintenance is a natural consequence of operation. Engineers leading the development of the GAU also oversee maintenance training for the fighters.

The AC-130 is a C-130 converted into a gunship, primarily for night attacks against ground targets. All armaments evolved from the first operational armament, the AC-47, to the AC-119, and then the AC-130A which became the basis for the modern Hercules C-130 armament.

The AC-130 has a combat history dating back to Vietnam. The battleship destroyed more than 10,000 trucks and was credited with many life-saving close air support missions. During Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, AC-130s intercepted enemy air defense systems and attacked ground forces in order to successfully attack Point Salines airfield with friendly airfields and ground forces.
The AC-130 also played a major role during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989, when it destroyed the headquarters of the Panamanian Defense Forces and numerous command and control facilities.

During Operation Desert Storm, AC-130s provided close air support and troop protection (air base protection) for ground forces. The weapon was also used during operations Continue Hope and United Shield in Somalia, providing close air support for UN ground forces. The weapon also plays an important role in supporting the NATO mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. AC-130s provide air interdiction against key targets in the Sarajevo area.
In 1997, warships were diverted from Italy to provide combat air support for US and allied ground forces during the evacuation of US non-combatants in Albania and Liberia. The AC-130 was also part of the US force in 1998 to persuade Iraq to comply with UN weapons inspections.
In 1999, AC-130s participated in combat operations in Kosovo, where the use of radar systems to identify and attack targets was used for the first time. Most recently, AC-130 warships have supported operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn and were used in support of operations Enduring Freedom and Resolute Support. Finally, AFSOC weapons have also played a major role in recent insurgencies in the Middle East. These weapons provide armed reconnaissance, interdiction and direct support of ground forces engaging enemy forces.
